Celebrate National Surveyor's Week
March 18-24, 2012

The Southeast Chapter of the Michigan Society of Professional Surveyors (MSPS) is an affiliated chapter of MSPS.

Our Mission

According to our bylaws:

"The purpose shall be to promote public faith and dependability in services rendered by members of this organization, to promote the common good and welfare of its members in their activities in the profession of Land Surveying, to promote and maintain the highest standards of professional practices and ethics, to promote uniformity of practice, to discourage unethical practices and professional abuses and to extend and supplement the aims and objectives of this Society."

We hold membership meetings and board meetings at regular intervals.  We also participate in a variety of projects that promote our profession to the public.

Projects

Boat Races
MSPS participates in a prominent role in the Detroit Thunderfest and Pontiac Lake Quake on the Lake hydroplane races.  Volunteers from our chapter work with the race organizers to design the course layout, set the buoys at a precise location, re-set the buoys as necessary, and constantly check their location throughout the event in order to certify the course layout.  Both events provide high visibility of our profession to a large audience.

Career Days
Volunteers from our chapter participate in several career day events at local schools.  Volunteers speak with the students and answer questions regarding land surveying.  They encourage younger generations to participate in surveying and promote a further understanding of what we do.

Science Olympiad
The Science Olympiad program is a statewide competition for high school and middle school students.  Volunteers from our Chapter write questions that test a student's understanding and use of the State of Michigan map and United States Geological Survey (USGS) Quadrangle Topographic Maps.  After writing questions and compiling the test, the members check the test for clarity.  Volunteers also serve as proctors for the regional exam.  The complex questions  encourage a thorough understanding of maps and promote map reading.

Trig-Star
Trig-Star is an annual competition sponsored by the National Society of Professional Surveyors and the local MSPS sponsor.  The program goal is to recognize and stimulate the best students of mathematics from among school districts across the United States utilizing a competition with scholarship awards.  The Trig-Star program is designed to:

  •   promote excellence in the mastery of mathematics in high school
  •  honor high school students who have demonstrated their superior skill among classmates at the local, state, and national levels
  •  acquaint high school students with the use and practical applications of mathematics in the surveying professions
  •  build an awareness of surveying and mapping as a profession among mathematically skilled high school students, career guidance counselors, and high school math teachers
